The Influence of Social Participation on Quality of Life in the Elderly with Parkinson¡¯s Disease

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study was to identity factors affecting quality of life of the elderly in Parkinson`s disease.
Methods: Data are collected from 187 elders with Parkinson`s disease over 60 years. The instruments used in this study were ADL, depression, social participation and quality of life.
Results: The quality of life were significantly correlated to income, duration of illness, gait disturbance, ADL, social participation and depression(p for all<.01). The significant predictors of quality of life were social participation(þá=.52, p<.001) and depression(þá=-.31, p<.001). These factors accounted for 58% of variance in the quality of life.
Conclusion: The program to increase quality of life for the elderly with Parkinson`s disease should be designed to develope nursing strategy for social participation and depression.
